ABOUT US

Form Contemporary Dance Theatre is committed to the creation, presentation, education and development of contemporary dance. We are interested in exploring collaboration with different art forms and to challenge the boundaries of what dance ought to be.

Form Contemporary Dance Theatre is directed by Mayumi Lashbrook, Lisa Emmons and Mateo Galindo Torres. The company started in 2014, since then we have performed in Toronto, Montreal, Burlington and Hamilton and successfully self produced three full length shows. These next two shows, are going to thrust us even further into our communities and solidify our position within it!

 THE PRODUCTIONS

As a company we are producing two distinct shows that overlap in theme and content. The first show we are presenting is Variations of Silence at The Burlington Performing Arts Centre as part of their 2016/2017 season. Directly following, we are presenting a show in Toronto calledRE(Variations) as part of the DanceWorks CoWorks Series. The various works presented in each show are listed below:

  • I:Variations is a solo created and performed by Mateo with visual artist Carlos Delgado. The work explores the multiple realities that can coexist within one individual, and how these realities shift and mould through time according to circumstances and experiences. Carlos' live painting will reflect back the layers of Mateo's consciousness seen and unseen. Greg Harrison will be composing the music for the piece.

  • Revel is a new collaboration by Lisa, Mayumi and Mateo. Revel will be an exploration of the word ‘revel’. The work will follows the pursuit of pure joy and euphoria that invites audiences to enjoy themselves freely. We've brought Heidi Strauss in to help with the choreographic process and hone the freedom within the exploration of revelling.

  • Storm and Silence is a piece created by Lisa. The work is a mosaic of spoken word, live music, movement and contemporary dance. The storyline of the piece is from family folklore told to Lisa by her grandmother about the tale of Lorelei, a professional dancer living in Germany during WWII and the GDR era. This tale invites spectators to consider that we have no better task than to take pleasure in our lives and pursue our passions. Among the performers is violist Anthony Rapoport, animating the piece with live music.

  • (Parentheses) is a duet collaboratively created by Lisa and Mayumi. The work explores the idea of ‘parentheses’ as personal elements of conversations that are often unspoken but inherently understood. The premiere of the work came with rave reviews - 'In essence, both Emmons and Lashbrook bring emotional joy to their audience' Sara Cymbalisty. For the Toronto premiere of (Parentheses), Anya Mielniczek, a Toronto based visual artist, will create a visual space for the piece to exist within.

THE GOAL

The total cost of these productions is $43,000. To date we have secured $11,000 and we are waiting to hear from artistic granting agencies. We have hired performers and artists, the shows are booked and the rehearsal schedule has been set. We have prioritized the contracted artist fees and below is a list of artists engaged who will benefit from your generosity:

There are many costs associated with one production, let alone two. Our goal is to put on two fulfilling performances, but the costs associated with these productions may be more than meets the eye. Dance is one of the most expensive, yet underfunded art forms. The budgets for both shows are the most conservative possible. To give more insight into the obstacles we face, below are costs per one minute of choreography you see on stage.

In short, we are gregarious and passionate. Our goal is to create intoxicating and physical performances and we are pursuing the budget required to do so.

Risks and challenges

Incase we are not successful with our funding, we have mapped out contingencies. Here are some of the switches we'd make in light of funding: fees for all engaged artists vs. omit our own artistic fees (Mateo, Mayumi, Lisa), professional calibre costumes vs. using our own found clothing, original commissioned music vs. recorded music, professional standard rehearsal space vs. gym space. We are aware of the risks and challenges ahead, and are forging ahead in pursuit of what we believe to be an exciting season of dance & art.

We can't thank you enough for your support and love in our upcoming endeavours. We hope you join us in presenting Variations of Silence & RE(Variations).
