One single generation of Black American musicians gave the world its most universal and enduring contemporary music, now called Jazz and Blues. Born in the American South aftermath to slavery, and grappling with poverty and racism, they created the sounds, songs and myths upon which the mega-billion dollar music industry was built. This generation is now forgotten and quickly disappearing. While younger performers carry their legacy to new audiences in a global marketplace, they survive far from a spotlight playing wherever they can in the few opportunities they have.
