Hi, I'm Emma Easton-Powell, 22, and I'm the founder of Epiony. I'm currently a student studying Biology at Edge Hill university and all my life I've loved and owned ponies, currently I have two, Bee and Polo, who are featured throughout my Kickstarter campaign.
It all started when...
In 2011 aged 16 I received £200 from my grandparents for my birthday, instead of spending it all on clothes and going out, I saw an equine back massage machine for sale on the internet and decided to invest my £200 and rent it out to fellow equine enthusiasts. It was so popular that I had made my money back plus some.
In 2014, I wanted to expand on my massage machine renting business. So I spent the profits that I had made from the renting business on 100 Massage Mitts and named my new business 'The Massage Mitt'.
I first set up a Facebook page for people to purchase through. It became so popular that I couldn't keep up with sending invoices to people. A website was then born!
It didn't stop there, people would post videos of their horses reactions to the Massage Mitt and these videos would go viral, 25,000-50,000 views. It got so much attention it received a full page feature by the national magazine 'Your Horse'.
In 2016, along side reading for a degree in Biology, I re-branded it to become 'Epiony' which is the Greek goddess of soothing pain (spelt Epione), an appropriate name for the type of products sold.
I designed and produced 'The Heat Pad' using the money I made from the Massage Mitts. It was launched in August and it hit the ground running, there was so much interest in the product.
My funding only allowed me to produced an initial 100 Heat Pads, within the first two months of launching I had the magazine 'Your horse' produce an article on it, I had interest from both equine and human physiotherapists and online shops enquire about stocking 'The Heat Pad'.
That brings us to 2017, the year I graduate from university, where who knows what the year ahead will hold for my business but hopefully I can make it a full time job.
Epiony is a brand that specialises in feel good therapies for both people and animals. Epiony's products include the hugely popular ‘Massage Mitt ’and ‘The Heat Pad’ which has just been launched with great success, both products are simple and easy to use.
ABOUT THE HEAT PAD
The Heat Pad has been designed to be completely mobile using a 12-volt smart lithium ion battery with four temperature settings. The battery has a special built in thermostat which allows the battery to automatically turn off if it were to get too hot. The Heat Pad has been specially made with a light weight super soft leatherette fabric which enables the pad to be wiped clean, combined with this fabric is a heat resistant insulation wadding which reflects the heat back onto the muscles.
The Heat Pad package includes;
- The Heat Pad (33cm*45cm)
- A tough 600D polyester protective bag
- 170 cm long neoprene waist belt (can be cut down or folded to size)
- An elastic strap (surcingle) (two sizes available to choose from 180cm long or 215cm)
- A 12 volt smart lithium ion battery with four temperature settings
- A charger
BENEFITS OF HEAT THERAPY
Heat therapy dilates the blood vessels of the muscles. This process increases the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, helping to heal the damaged tissue and increase the elimination of carbon dioxide and metabolic waste.
- Heat stimulates the sensory receptors in the skin, which means that applying heat to any part of the body, on both people and animals, will decrease transmissions of pain signals to the brain and partially relieve discomfort
- Heat therapy will decrease stiffness, increase flexibility and improve overall feeling of comfort. Especially around the poll and saddle area on horses and lower back and shoulders on people
Not just for horses, people too...
- Heat also is excellent at aiding relaxation and reducing stress
The battery pack is mobile and can be moved from the heat pad onto the neoprene waist belt. The logo has been created out of a faux gold foil which really adds the finishing touch.
WHAT I AIM TO DO
The first production of The Heat Pad has been launched with great success, I now want to be able to distribute The Heat Pad out to stockists. However I need extra funds to order a larger batch than 100 and to make that a reality I have come to Kickstarter where I can make my dream of running a successful business come true. I am also only able to distribute The Heat Pad within the UK due to postage and insurance costs but extra funds would enable me to offer the products world wide.
Last but not least a huge thank you for reading.
Risks and challenges
My risk with the project is keeping up with the many orders I have been receiving, but I have family on hand who are always willing to help!
