Hand Machined FlatTop Spin Coins
I am an enthusiast of high-quality machined spinning tops, and have a small collection at home. I rotate my tops for EDC (everyday carry), and find the stem often proves uncomfortable in my pocket. I decided to make the FlatTop, a stemless EDC Spinning coin. Removing the stem results in a top that feels great in your hand and is comfortable in your pocket as well!
The FlatTop is BIG! At 1.5 inches in diameter, this top has serious heft and a nice solid feel in the hand. There is something satisfying about handling a nice solid chunk of metal. The brass and copper versions are substantial yet, when placed in the pocket, they nearly disappear. I've carried my personal brass FlatTop now for a couple months, and rarely notice it at all.
Brass - 360 Brass
Copper - 145 Tellurium Copper
Aluminum - 6061 Aluminum
Brass and copper are great metals - solid, heavy, and they develop a fantastic patina over time. If you haven't handled brass or copper before, you will not be disappointed. They have serious weight and feel great to hold.
The FlatTop is designed to be something you enjoy having in your pocket and carried frequently; it is not designed for record breaking spin times. The significant weight of the top and the 1/16" silicon nitride bearing results in respectable and easily achievable spin times of 5 min plus for someone who has no experience spinning a top. Spinning the top from the outer diameter results in lower RPMs compared to stemmed tops, however, I have achieved spin times over 12 minutes using the limited edition copper FlatTop with the buffalo nickel. I had to double-check myself, but the second spin was 12 minutes 28 seconds! I have no proof other than my word and a screenshot of my phone's stopwatch, but it is indeed correct!
The copper FlatTop is machined from a solid rod of Tellurium copper. Copper is an awesome metal in terms of both physical properties and aesthetics. Copper and its alloys were some of the first metallic elements discovered by ancient man and you can put a custom chunk of that metal in your pocket, spin it, and make your friends jealous!
The brass FlatTop is simply impressive. Brass is renowned for its acoustic properties and looks similar to gold! As is the case with copper, it will develop a nice patina over time, which gives it a character that is unique to you. The more that you carry and handle it, the quicker the patina will develop and evolve. It can always be polished back up to a bright shine with some metal polish.
I offer an entry-level aluminum FlatTop . While there are not many tops made of aluminum due to its light weight, it's a nice entry point for someone entering the spinning top world. When polished up, aluminum looks sharp.
Quality, craftsmanship and simplicity matter. In the day and age where most things are mass produced as quickly as possible at the lowest cost with the most features, it's rare to find something of true quality. Something that an individual made, by hand, on their time…something that will last for ages. One day, (far FAR in the future, I hope) my grand-kids will be excited to get "grandpa's old top". When I made the initial prototype, I was ashamed that my 4-year-old son had no idea what a 'top' was. “There's no electronics, no screen, no buttons, so…what is it dad?” Once I showed him he was hooked, and in that instant my top became his ("mine!", in his words).
Each FlatTop will come with a soft muslin carry bag with drawstrings as well as a card describing your FlatTop.
If you have never purchased a spinning top before, spring for the FlatTop, you will not be disappointed. If you already have an arsenal of spinning tops, the FlatTop will be a great addition.
As a limited edition, I am offering the copper FlatTop with a buffalo nickel pressed into the top. I've been an enthusiast of coins since I was a kid and have always loved the buffalo nickel. A classic, timeless design over 100 years old that pairs perfectly with the simplicity of the FlatTop. This version is limited to 30 pieces.
I realize that the limited edition Copper top with the Buffalo nickel is a bit pricey, which is why I wanted to add in an additional piece that comes with it. Begleri is a small skill toy consisting of one or more beads at either end of a short string. The toy can be flipped and twirled around the fingers to perform tricks. Machined from .500" solid copper round bar, these can be fun to keep in your pocket to keep your fingers busy.
We've had some custom FlatTop boxes and information cards made up. If you are getting your FlatTop as a gift, it will come nicely packaged and ready to wrap!
