Stoicism has inspired millions for centuries. Military generals, heads of state, athletes, and most recently, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, have embraced it as a framework for thriving in the face of adversity.
“You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
Epictetus, Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius are some of history's greatest moral, political and military leaders. But they were also human. By studying their works, we can draw strength from their life experiences.
For many high-performers--whether they're athletes, entrepreneurs, or political leaders--Stoicism is the key ingredient for turning setbacks into success. Adversity is certain. We may lose a job. Our business could fail. Someone we love might get sick. But it's our reaction to adversity, not the adversity itself, that determines how our life's narrative will play out.
"A setback has often cleared the way for greater prosperity. Many things have fallen only to rise to more exalted heights." - Seneca, Letters from a Stoic
Stoicism is having a "moment". Popular media outlets are covering it more frequently, while more and more famous high-performers are going on record as having implemented it in their lives.
Individuals who have implemented Stoicism in their lives:
- George Washington
- Tom Brady
- J.K. Rowling
- Thomas Jefferson
- Nita Strauss
- Tim Ferriss
- Pete Carroll
- Anna Kendrick
- Theodore Roosevelt
- Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale
- Michele Tafoya
- Bill Clinton
- Wen Jiabao
- John D. Rockefeller
- Arianna Huffington
- Joe Maddon
- Arnold Schwarzenegger
- Bill Belichick
Today, droves of self-help gurus are talking about Stoicism. But in the age of 140-character tweets, its core virtues can get lost in translation. If we want to implement stoicism in our life, we need more than an Instagram feed full of inspirational quotes; we need to study it in its pure, original form.
STOIK Books makes this possible.
D E S I G N
After pouring over a number of English translations, we selected three of stoicism's most influential works and compiled them into a three-volume set: Epictetus' Discourses, Seneca’s Letters & Essays, and Marcus Aurelius' Meditations.
We re-formatted these texts so you can read them like you'd read your favorite novel. Every detail of the design--the cloth-bound cover, the matching slipcase, the Smyth sewn binding, and the unique illustrations--was designed to complement the timeless value of the text itself.

We hope to deliver STOIK Books before April. But it's difficult to gauge the time it will take us to finalize, print, package, and ship STOIK Books and the Emblems in bulk.
We're very confident with several of the steps we need to take to make this happen. For example, we're completely done with STOIK's design, layout, and font, and we have a few manufacturers lined up to print the product. But we're less familiar with a few other steps. For example, although we have plenty of experience in publishing, we've never shipped such a (hopefully) large number of books before. Figuring out the fulfillment and shipment process is new to us, but we're confident we can execute here as well.
There haven't been any hiccups in the production process up to this point (knock on wood) and we attribute this to help from several mentors who have also manufactured and shipped large quantities of books and art.
We're confident that the final result will be a beautiful, worthy addition to your library.
Lastly, we plan on remaining transparent and communicative throughout the entire Kickstarter process. Witholding information only hurts us in the long-run. We're not quite a well-oiled machine, but we feel that if we keep our backers informed, they'll be more satisfied with the final product than if we choose to hide information keep them in the dark.
