St. Honore: the Patron Saint of Bakers print
St. Honore: the Patron Saint of Bakers print

This project has already launched.

Prior to lives of piety and miraculous events they were often just regular folk like you and me, getting into trouble and doing silly things like living in a hollow chestnut tree or smashing a priest's nose with a rock or even corralling the enemies of their tribe into a hut and burning it all down into a smoldering ruin of ash and spite.

See? Regular folk.

While he wasn't known for immolating his enemies, Honore (or Honoratus in the Latin tongue) was evidently enough of a rascal as a child that when his former nursemaid heard that he had been appointed Bishop of Amiens, she struck her baker's peel to the ground and announced that she would believe it when her peel grew into a tree. Legend has it that her peel took root and grew into a mulberry tree that bore both flower and fruit.

Honore was attributed with a variety of miracles. On one occasion during Mass, as Honore was holding the Host at the consecration, he experienced a vision of the hand of Christ holding the Host at that very same moment. This particular miracle is recorded within this illustration.  A chapel was built in his honor, and it was at this chapel that local bakers formed their guild.

He's also the namesake of the Gateau St. Honore. It's equal parts miraculous and delicious.

Eventually canonized, Honore was appointed patron saint of bakers (as well as confectioners, bakers of altar bread, candle-makers, florists, flour merchants, corn chandlers, oil refiners, and pastry chefs). All religious aspects aside, he was a humble man who did good things and is now eternally associated with bread. You go, Honore!

Inspired in equal parts by the tale of Honore and threats from my friend the pastry chef to cut off my weekly supply of freshly baked sweets, I have produced what I think is a lovely print honoring St. Honore and I am releasing it here on Kickstarter.

As a final note, every print is produced in my own workshop using pigmented inks on Epson Cold Press Bright Signature Worthy archival papers (100% cotton fiber, acid-free, lignin-free, 340gsm). Although prints are rated for 200+ years, no guarantees are made as to their longevity (but don't hang them in direct sunlight and they should outlast you).

Add-Ons

Need an extra one of these and two of those? Once you make a pledge, you can adjust your pledge and simply increase it by however much you need to for a given reward. Once the funding period is over, I'll send out a backer survey where there will be a space for you to tell me exactly what the extra money is for.

Add $2.00 per additional mini-card
Add $10.00 per additional small print
Add $30.00 per additional bespoke print
Add $95.00 per additional 24k signed & numbered print

Stretch Goals

Stretch goals can get really confusing really quickly and I may yet be tipsy from carnival season in New Orleans so I'd like to keep it simple:

$1,500 GOAL: If funding reaches $1,500.00 then every backer will also receive 1 mini-card as a thank you!

$6,000 GOAL: If funding reaches $6,000.00 then every backer pledging $35.00 or more will receive a laser-etched acrylic 'coin' depicting St. Honore as a special bonus!

Proof of concept. The actual coin will be significantly different. In related news, LASER CUTTERS ARE FRIGGIN' AWESOME!
