When I was basically an overgrown (flower) child, albeit one with a grownup's camera and lust for adventure, I had the fortune to be living in the Bay Area. The years 1967-1972 were a particularly interesting time to be living and I managed to photograph several of the area's local bands, as well as others who found their way to San Francisco's Fillmore West, along with many other venues. I found myself standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Jim Marshall, shooting away, more than once at these venues. Unlike Mr. Marshall, I kept my images in the closet for the last 50 years or so. Now, many people are urging me to do something with them so this project is designed to see if I can raise enough money to finally publish them. The images are ready to go. The subjects include Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, The Who, Mountain, Joni Mitchell, Maria Muldaur, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, The Monkees, and a photo essay shot at the Rolling Stones' free concert at Altamont. There are also more recent photos of artists including Love with Arthur Lee, Dirk Hamilton, Peter Himmelman. Other shots in my library, which might find inclusion in the final book include Aimee Mann, Albert Lee , Andy & The Rattlesnakes, Arthur Lee, B.B. King, Barry McGuire (New Christy Minstrels), Billy Harvey, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Danny O’Keefe, Dave Alvin (Blasters), Elvis Costello, Flame, Guitar Shorty, Jackshit, Jackson Browne, Louise Goffin, LOVE, Richard Thompson, Smokin’ Joe Kubek, Susanna Hoffs, The Groovy Rednecks, Thomas Walsh (Pugwash) Van Dyke Parks, Waddy Wachtel (Warren Zevon) and others - the goal being to entertain and delight with great shots of great artists. I will be annotating the photographs with some recollections of the events. I hope I am able to reach my goal so I can have a book produced which will probably astound fans of these legendary musicians.
