Nupinion: The Smart News Toolbox For Digital Citizens

This project has already launched.

Democracy needs informed and critical citizens.

Take the hassle out of staying informed and get a well-rounded view with Nupinion. See different news sources on any topic side by side. Filter news by outlet, country or political slant. Find out who is involved. Get opposing perspectives, avoid fake news and pop your news bubble.

Help us make Nupinion free to use, impartial and ad-free.

The Challenge

Help anyone understand the news.

  • 24 hour news cycle chaos got you down?
  • Overwhelmed with information?
  • Sick of alternative facts and fake news?
  • Looking to burst your social media echo chamber?

Take the pain out of diversifying your news sources and stop sticking your head in the digital sand. Turn the confusing flood of news into a steady stream of insights with Nupinion. Easily find important information, challenge your ideas, burst your news bubble and get the full story. For free. With no ads.

Imagine you're trying to learn more about a news story. Think of the news you're looking for as a tasty piece of fish swimming in the vast ocean of information out there.

How You Find More Information Now

If you're Googling search terms to find news articles, you're a lone fisher casting a line again and again over a huge range of dubious information. You don't quite know where to look. Chances are you'll never find that delicious piece of fish you really want.

How You Find More Information With Nupinion

If you're using Nupinion, you're the captain of a fishing fleet. Point in a direction and your fleet will trawl the ocean for fish. Then your crew organises all the fish and serves you the finest salmon sashimi in seconds.

So how does it actually work?

The Solution

Transform the ocean of news into useful information.

Actually Understand News Coverage

Explore the key topics in a story. Get a left-wing, center, and right-wing opinion. Learn which outlets and countries are publishing the most.

Find Information That Matters Fast

Cut through the noise to find relevant information. Filter articles by country, outlet and political slant. Find out the people and places mentioned most. Who's tweeting what. What videos are out there and more.

Burst Your Social Media News Bubble

Your bubble might be cosy. But it's not helping you understand the world. Nupinion is the anti-personalisation news algorithm. We don't restrict the news you see to the sources you like. Why? Because it's important to challenge your ideas and recognise what's out there.

Want To Try It Out?

A picture's worth a thousand words but a prototype's worth a thousand pictures. Take Nupinion Beta for a spin. Remember, its sources and features are very limited. The real Nupinion will be way more powerful. Think typewriter compared to quantum computer.

The Rewards

Funny news merch with a message.

We think Nupinion should be free for everyone. You can choose a reward option that ensures 100% of your contribution goes directly towards Nupinion. But we wanted to give you another reason to become part of our journey. We're pretty excited about what we came up with.

Check out our mix of funny news-related stickers, canvas tote bags, t-shirts and hoodies. Grab some awesome Nupinion merchandise for yourself or a friend while it lasts. Show your support for news literacy and get some smiles while you're at it. Available nowhere else but Kickstarter.

Why We Need You

Information ain't actually free.

Imagine our excitement the day we started connecting sources to Nupinion. A new way to explore news! Imagine our disappointment when we realised the cost. The more people use it the more expensive it becomes. That's why we need you. We even drew you two complex graphs to explain why.

Our funding goal is the bare minimum. The more we get, the better we can make Nupinion! Your support will fund the following in order:

  • Sending merchandise to you - rewards
  • Making Nupinion accessible to everyone for free - servers
  • Increasing the number of news sources connected - servers
  • Improving features and bug testing - development

Who We Are

Three news junkies turned friends.

We met several years ago at the University of Oxford. We studied very different things: international relations, statistical genetics, and computational biology. We certainly didn't cross paths in our departments but we forged a bond out of a common desire. To build a better way to explore and engage with news.

Since then, we've been working in our own fields to support ourselves. We collaborate on Nupinion in our own time. Your support will help us improve our servers and might even let us develop this full time. We believe our combined skills and experience put us in a great position to build smarter news tools for digital citizens everywhere.
