Nearby
Nearby

This project has already launched.

The concept of Nearby is simple, we want to make it easier to share stuff with the people around you. We believe that everyone wins when we share with our neighbors: sellers can make extra money off the stuff they have sitting around, buyers can save money & space by borrowing things they don't need very often, and we can lower consumption. Let's face it, most of us have too many items, whether it's the camping gear we bought for that one trip a couple years ago or the crock-pot that never made it out of the box.

Specifically, Nearby is a mobile application available for iOS and Android. We include in-app payments using Stripe, use your geolocation to show you posts nearby, and use push notifications to alert you of recent requests in your area & update you on the status of your offers & requests.

We continue to work on improving the app everyday. Feedback from our users is incredibly valuable, and we will continue to iterate based on what we hear. Please keep the feedback coming!

Our app went live in Washington, DC on May 20th. Since then, we've gotten a couple hundred downloads and currently have about 190 registered users. There are currently about 20 posts in the DC area and we've completed 5 transactions. We had considerable bumps in activity after participating in events, such as a Glover Park Day. We've also grown our social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Getting the word out is our toughest challenge right now, so we need your help!

We want to continue to increase our presence in the DC area and we want to launch on college campuses this Fall, starting with DC colleges (Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, American) and Virginia Tech. We would like 1000 users in Washington, DC by September 1st.  In addition to improving the app itself, we need to ramp up our marketing efforts. Kei, Kelsey, & Ken do not get paid for working on Nearby & have completely bootstrapped up to this point, but we could use some money to help us in several areas: paying interns & college ambassadors, accounting & tax software, server costs, database costs, marketing & new equipment (laptops & test phones).  Any extra money we raise would help Kelsey & Kei extend their runway before they need to pickup extra work/contracts to pay the bills. A super stretch goal would be getting enough funds to bring on another developer!  No contribution is too small, but if you can't contribute, we'd love if you would download our app, follow us on social media, and help spread the word!
