The Adventures of Casey and the Jackelope:
Search for The Book of The Guardians
-An Educational Book for Kids by a Kid and Her Dad-
The Story: During a failed heist, Casey is certain that she saw some kind of strange animal. She tries to convince herself that she was seeing things, but that's when that very creature shows up in her house. He is a jackelope named Jack Lopez, and he needs Casey's help. Jack is a Guardian, one of many mythical creatures whose job is to protect the world's greatest treasures. Why is he recruiting Casey? Her dad was Jack's partner, and he taught Casey everything he knew.
Together, with the help of other cryptids like a griffin, a yeti, the Chupacabra, and the Loch Ness Monster, Casey and Jack will have to travel around the world to defeat the evil Jersey Devil and find The Book of The Guardians before he does.
The Story Behind the Story: Casey and I are a father and daughter who decided to turn a bedtime story into a book series. One night, Casey asked me to make up a brand new story. I had a character in my head that I could never successfully build a narrative around. That character was a jackelope named Jack Lopez who was an Indiana Jones type of adventurer. I decided to use him for the bedtime story.
As any dad might, I added Casey to the story as a nineteen-year-old master thief, and it began to grow. While I talked, Casey added ideas. Each night, we concocted a new piece, and we decided to write it all down.
My favorite writing moment happened a few months ago. We were preparing to write a pivotal chapter. I got a white board and a marker, and I suggested that we make notes. Casey took the marker and said, "I got it." She sat on the floor and wrote out the entire scene. I didn't say a word. All I could do was watch my eight-year-old daughter as she filled the board. It got pretty dusty in that room all of a sudden.
As we got into the final rewrites, Casey illustrated the characters, and the first book was complete. More adventures are being written for Jack and Casey.
Why It's Educational: As the dad in this writing duo, I handled the typing. At times, I used words that my daughter did not know. When we did our edits, I explained those words to her, and they are now part of her vocabulary. Together, we decided to keep those words and phrases in the book and use them as a learning opportunity.
As you read, you will notice that some words and phrases are underlined. Definitions for those terms will be found in the glossary at the back of the book. The definitions included fit the context of their usage within the book. They also include the page number where the word is found so you won’t lose your place.
We figured that this would not only serve an educational purpose, but keep the reader in the book instead of sending you to an outside source.
The story also uses real researched locations and landmarks around the world.
Why We Seek Funding: While writing and illustration are done in house (literally in our house), we need funding for cover design, printing costs, marketing, and production for the audio book.
When funding is complete, we will be able to have the book printed and shipped in time to make a perfect holiday gift.
