Our Story

Sri Lanka is fast losing its traditional arts and crafts against the tide of fast fashion and mass manufacturing. Passed down the generations and perfected over the centuries, these traditional crafts are too beautiful for the world to lose.

The Traditional Artisans of Henavala

Legend has it that over 300 years ago two brothers presented a handwoven wall hanging to the then king of Sri Lanka's last royal kingdom, Kandy and the king was so impressed with their work he bestowed upon them a royal deed settling them in the village of Henavala.

Today, descendants of the original settlers carry on the handwoven craft with pride, passion and precision.

The Hana Plant

The hana plant yields the core material used to create all of our products and Kantala itself is named after the Sanskrit word for the hana plant.

The hana plant (Agave cantala) is a sustainable plant with a signature rosette of thick leaves which can reach up to 2 meters in length. When leaves are sustainably harvested the rosette will continue to regrow until it flowers and dies.

The Last Generation

Mr Dharmadasa, the grand master of Henavala, and his team of weavers are quite possibly the last generation of hana mat weavers in Sri Lanka. That's why we at Kantala are giving them a platform through the brand because our traditional arts are too beautiful to lose.

Trading Fairly

Trading fairly and with mutual respect is a core principle of how we operate at Kantala.

Let's Take A Giant Leap, Together

To revive this traditional craft we have to take Kantala beyond Sri Lanka and to the World sharing the beauty of the handwoven hana mat through Kantala's fashion accessories. So, we invite you to pre-order our products and be part of this journey as we take a giant leap beyond Sri Lanka to the World so future generations will enjoy this wonderful craft.

The Team

Vikum (left) and Nadishan (right).

We started Kantala as a result of our aspirations to place Sri Lanka on the global market by leveraging Sri Lanka's rich culture and natural beauty. We hope you will love owning them as much as we love making them for you. Every purchase that you make with us, also helps to sustain traditional artisans in Sri Lanka who are trying to keep the age-old art of weaving alive.

Important Notes

  • All products will be dispatched during the first week of December 2017.
  • However, please note that delays may occur owing to reasons beyond Kantala's control. Throughout the fulfilment period we will be sharing regular updates with you and should a delay occur, we will always keep you informed. We have factored contingencies which we hope will cover any unforeseen delays.
  • This is a collection of handmade products using natural materials. Therefore, please be mindful that no two products will look exactly the same and will show mild inconsistencies to the products pictured above. That in itself is the beauty of handmade products.
  • At all times Kantala remains committed to upholding high quality standards and will not deliver to customers any product with human or any other avoidable error.
  • Contributors are responsible for settling duties and taxes applicable in the country of import.
  • Once shipped at the point of entry to your country, packages might be subject to customs inspections. The duration taken to clear at customs can vary from country to country and this can cause a delay during the delivery period.
