Hi, I'm Jeni Wren! I'm the producer and host of the music industry podcast, Gritty Birds.
Over the last 2 years I've produced nearly 60 episodes on a shoestring budget with the support of volunteers, trade partnership and grants from partners including RACC, Vortex Music Magazine, XRAY.FM, Tender Loving Empire, Self Group and The Business Department.
Heading in our 3rd year, I'm looking for your support to raise $6,000!
Your support will:
1) Upgrade my home and mobile studio
2) Help pay travel costs for conferences and workshops related to storytelling and audio engineering
3) Launch a line of merch including Gritty Birds first band releases in partnership with Revolver Studios
4) Launch our new website
5) Support a part time employee to help build our team!
We've set up budgets with local businesses including Misplaced Print, Crave Dog, regional music distributors and more. Partnerships with national retailers including RME and through my job at Guitar Center will guarantee the ability to stay within our budgets and also support the music economy.
Scratching the surface of engineering, promotion creativity, I realized I had some questions.
Like.. a LOT of them
I've been asking them ever since.
And my alter ego Gritty Birds was born.
In our first year, I interviewed artists behind the scenes and expanded in the spring to interview artists within the eye of the Do It Yourself Movement, pairing with Treefort Music Fest and Self Group.
Leaning into the second year I teamed up with Portland Community Radio Station, XRAY.FM, exploring a new show format and higher profile artists, developing deep relationships with artists and publicists from up and down the west coast.
My travels expanded quickly in the second year including trips to Pickathon and a RACC grant funded trip to Chicago for Podcast Movement, while staying close to my Portland roots helping produce PDX Pop Now!
In the new year, Gritty Birds started to quickly expand, following a trip to NAMM and Treefort Music Fest and a new partnership with Revolver Studios, recording artist performances for the show.
Currently I have hours of footage to share from our live series and Treefort Music and am in dire need of a boost to support key tools that will help us in our third year.
Year three will be heavily focused on exploring the world of recording, which is going to mean a proper home studio.
Currently, I am using a very simple set up, with limited capabilities. I have access to the XRAY.FM studio for recording but am more than ready for an upgraded home studio for editing.
Gritty Birds is raising $6000 for our year three upgrade
An upgraded studio:
$2000 for gear upgrades including the Babyface Pro, Yamaha studio speakers, new software, a screen monitor, proper broadcasting mic(Shure's SM7B), recording mics for bands, a studio desk, a low light lens and cables and stands. I've worked out deep discounts through professional relationships with brands as well as my job in retail gear sales, to help offset the costs.
$750 to launch our new website, which has been in the works since last year. This will be a major upgrade, with easier blogging features and accessibility.
$1,500 travel budget and conference budget. This year I will be returning to Podcast Movement and am also eyeing workshops and conferences with a deeper focus on engineering.
$600 for operating costs for the next 6 months(including hosting, storage, facebook advertising and subscription fees to photo programs Light Room and Microsoft Word).
$750 for a line of merch including t-shirts, stickers, post-cards and our FIRST tape release, from our LIVE series(more info to come)
I'm setting 2 goals, one that allows me to cover bare minimums for the fundraiser, plus a stretch goal:
$1000 to support a paid staff*. I believe that we need to be paying into our communities to continue to support our creative communities. I've had the luck to have the support of volunteers, but I am looing to hire on a part-time permanent administrative assistant.
*possible if we can raise a 7,000 stretch goal
$400 for Kickstarter fees(approximate)
What will this do for Gritty Birds?
This bump sets Gritty Birds up to start generating revenue with my new website and line of merch and allows us to work, travel and grow as an engineer with some incredible new gear.
Not only will I be able to keep doing great podcasts but these upgrades will allow for more video content it the next year.
It allows me to travel with less anxiety, while supporting the Portland community by locally sourcing merch.
It allows me to expand our brand with a blog to continue to support great artists maintaining a high-qualityshow.
With your help, Gritty Birds can focus more on creating great content and building community.
Because this is what I LOVE to do and with your help, can keep doing.
