Thanks for joining us for this, the THIRD FantastiCon Kickstarter project!
This time we're planning a fun-filled weekend jam packed with activities in the beautiful seaside resort of Cleethorpes!
This project will help us fund the most expensive bits of the 2018 event.
Thanks to your amazing feedback and support over the past few years we've been able to refine the event and focus on what you want to see, do and experience throughout the weekend.
For FantastiCon 2018 we already have lots of gaming computers, virtual reality headsets, board games, guided RPG sessions, all weekend NERF wars, drone racing, live music, late bar, 3D Printing displays, retro gaming, cosplay, laser tag, an escape room, special guests and much more.
Here are a few pictures from previous events to whet your appetites!
As we're hoping to supercharge this year's event, the initial target of £4500 will cover the basic costs of the event. These are;
- Venue hire
- Various insurances for both the team, our guests and yourselves to keep you safe during the various activities
- Vehicle hire and fuel to move the guests and all the kit around
- Team accommodation
- Furniture hire
- Technical equipment and staff (including PAT testing the hundreds of powered electrical items)
- A modest marketing and promotional budget to help us get the word out by producing flyers, posters and paying for online advertising
- A small contingency
This is the initial amount of £4500 and will ensure that FantastiCon 2018 goes ahead and will be the fun, entertaining, exhilarating, exhausting, action packed, activity driven weekend for all the family those of you who have visited before have come to know and love.
And for those of you who haven't...
FantastiCon is NOT a shopping convention, although there will be a selection of hand picked traders at the event plying their wares for those collectors amongst you.
FantastiCon is a DOING convention, with the focus being on you and your family, getting you all involved in a variety of fun activities and making sure you all have a great time at the event.
It's a SF/Fantasy/Gaming/VR/Retro/Cosplay/Live Music event. Here's a link to the Official Website.
However, to be a little quirky, we always have a few extra things up our sleeves and this year is no different. At FantastiCon 2018 you can look forward to;
- A NERF arena - All weekend with weapons, targets, ammo and activities to take part in, all in with the cost of your ticket
- Drones - Above the NERF arena and throughout the convention, mini drones will be flown by our team of expert pilots who are only too willing to show you the ropes
- 3D Printing displays - A kind handful of folks have agreed to come along and set up their printers to show off their amazing, high tech hobby
- Special guests - We will announce more about these as the project progresses but we'll have guests from the games industry, TV, film and theatre
- Laser tag - A 5 versus 5 player laser tag arena complete with full wall mirror for those cheeky bounce shots, all using the UK's most cutting edge laser packs.
- Guided RPG sessions - Find your way through one of our Role Playing Games under the guiding hand of one of our experienced Games Masters
- An escape room - Grab your friends or make some new ones and try our escape room for free throughout the weekend
- All the latest virtual reality gaming - From HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Playstation VR, we have it all!
- Retro gaming - Relive your childhood and show your kids what real gaming is all about with a fully loaded retro gaming area with consoles and cabinet gaming
- A licensed medieval themed bar - The Golden Grail Tavern will be serving Ale, Wine and Grog all weekend including a late bar on Saturday night during the music evening
- Live Music on Saturday night - Join us from 7pm until Midnight and enjoy live music on stage including gentle vocalists, a comedy pirate due and even a rock band!
- Free, unlimited soft drinks and biscuits throughout the weekend - Yes, all weekend. Yes, unlimited. Yes, completely free!
- Swimming pool with wave machine, slide and something rather special indeed... This year we have access to a swimming pool and standard FantastiCon ticket holders can enjoy a £1 discount. The lucky VIP ticket holders get free access to the pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi all weekend. You don't get that at most conventions!
Sounds pretty exciting huh?
We've been running this event now since 2014 and year on year it has grown bigger, busier and more Fantastic for our visitors. We even added an Saturday evening party a couple of years ago.
Will you join us on Saturday night?
Yes! Oodles of it!
Although the convention itself continues into the evening for our music evening ticket holders, for your musical entertainment we have Jemma Johnson, Saraswati, the hilarious JollyBoat boys and Citadels, a heavy metal band from Manchester already booked for the event.
If we hit the first stretch goal and successfully supercharge the event, Gigi Edgley (who played Chiana in Farscape and co-hosted Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge among other things) and her brother Jake will come all the way from Los Angeles and finish their WANDERLAND tour live on stage at FantastiCon!
Gigi has also promised to come and play in the NERF arena too, so for you die hard Farscape fans, there's a good possibility of being attacked by Chiana in real life!
So, with so much amazing content waiting in the wings, how do we supercharge the event and add many layers of awesomeness to our already jam-packed activity weekend?
Anyone who's been to FantastiCon before knows that we pride ourselves on looking after our guests and our visitors alike and as such we have created some fantastic opportunities to supercharge this year's event.
We want to show you just how amazing FantastiCon can be and to do that we'll need to hit some stretch goals.
The stretch goals break down as follows;
This first goal includes the associated costs for our international celebrities, musicians and presenters. That's their travel, accommodation, expenses, fees, heaps of equipment and sound engineers. This goal will also cover additional equipment and technology to supercharge the NERF war, laser tag and drone racing to make them all even more interactive.
This year we have some really amazing professional entertainers ready to join us, including stars from across the pond like Gigi Edgley and her brother Jake who will join us for the whole weekend.
We'll also be able to book a very famous guest who has been at the forefront of a recent SF revival! If we get to this goal, we'll tell you who they are!
As with all our guests, musicians and authors, all are happy to sign autographs, grab selfies and generally play with the crowd all weekend. Some of our superstars may charge a fee for autographs and selfies.
What we'd love to do is to stream all the content from the convention live to the world. Here's how...
This second stretch goal will allow us to cover the mountains of equipment and technology needed for our cameras and game streamers to broadcast live from the event.
We are very lucky to attract international visitors to our event but it's not always easy to get all the way to the UK year after year so to say thanks to our furthest flung fans we'd love to be able to stream the event throughout the weekend with special digital access to talks, readings and music on Saturday night.
Wow! That's quite a leap! Just bear with us and we'll explain. This stretch goal will allow us to do something really quite amazing.
Along with adding all that extra value and excitement to this year's event with the previous two stretch goals, we'll be able to rebook the best aspects of FantastiCon 2018 straight away and use the remaining funds to secure both the venue and the dates for FantastiCon 2019 without the need for a Kickstarter campaign next year!
Essentially, this is the 'guarantee the awesomeness for another year' goal!
We hope so!
Get on board, grab your tickets and get ready for the most Fantastic weekend of your life, all with free, unlimited soft drinks and biscuits!
If you think this is an exciting enough weekend to enjoy with your friends and family then we'd be very grateful if you'd hit the share button and let as many folks know about it as possible. Thank you!
We have oodles of advertising space at the event as well as online game streams and a live streamed stage too.
Would you like to sponsor our event? We have eleven sponsorship opportunities as £1000 pledge gifts during this project and offer larger packages on the FantastiCon website too (just click the banner above for details).
Please send all enquiries to; firstname.lastname@example.org and come and join the fun!
Risks and challenges
What if I want to get more than one pledge gift? Every year this has happened at least once so we thought we'd pop the solution right here at the top of the risks and challenges section. To pledge for more than one gift (thank you very much) simply add together the costs of the pledges you would like, up your pledge to at least that amount and then send us a private message detailing what you need. Simple!
What if the pledge gifts are late? This has recently happened to a large event we attended and it caused quite a bit of frustration to the folks affected. With this in mind we're running the campaign a lot earlier than the event itself, giving us plenty of time to produce, post and fulfil both the digital and non-digital pledge gifts.
What if one of our celebrities has to pull out due to work commitments? This can and does happen and if the worst should happen we will use the funds from their booking fee to hire another celebrity if there is time or, if there isn't, we will use the funds to supercharge another area of the event such as the Saturday night music evening.
What if we don't meet any of the stretch goals? If this happens, sad though it would be, we have enough interactive and entertaining activities at FantastiCon to keep everyone busy and happy all weekend. It would be a shame not to be able to bring some celebrity guests to the convention, especially given how keen they are to meet the FantastiCon crowd, but it would not mean the event wouldn't go ahead without them.
What if the venue is flooded/damaged/unusable for the weekend? This is extremely unlikely but, if this happens, we will look to one of our backup venue spaces. We have a very good relationship with the folks who look after Cleethorpes and Grimsby's venues and we are confident that an alternative venue could be found in time, though the access to the pool, jacuzzi and sauna would of course be sadly removed. We wouldn't choose a different town as lots of people would have booked their hotel within reach of the leisure centre.
What if the internet fails us? The internet at the venue is easily powerful enough to accommodate our needs as it runs hundreds of computers every day. However, this has happened before at FantastiCon 2016 and the technical team responded wonderfully. The event has both on and offline aspects and either of these can be expanded to fill any gaps that appear in the schedule. For example, if a live stream from stage fails due to internet issues, we would replace it with something like Kate Russell's live retro Worms tournament, something that was extremely popular last year and that doesn't require an internet connection.
Some of the pledges include books. Do your authors get paid royalties even though they are not direct book sales? Yes, for this Kickstarter they do. Thanks for looking out for them!
What if we are overrun with Wookies and bikini clad Leias? The Star Wars cosplay community is great and, if there is an excess of either Wookies or bikini clad Leias, we have arranged extra space to accommodate them. We call it the 'cosplay overspill' room and it contains pre-warmed Jabba the Hutt replicas and a Storm Trooper shooting gallery.
What about the possibility of the outbreak of Nuclear War? This has never really been a concern but due to the current global political situation we thought it was worth mentioning. In the highly unlikely event of the breakout of nuclear war, Cleethorpes is far enough away from tactically important military sites in the UK to ensure that we will be able to enjoy what could possibly be the last great weekend of our lives.
