Et al. is a gallery program founded by Jackie Im, Aaron Harbour and Facundo Argañaraz in 2012. We are a commercial gallery program, kinda. Now run by Im and Harbour with various help, our focus is on bringing high-quality art exhibitions into existence at our Chinatown gallery, and soon, at our new second space on Mission Street near 24th Street.
With an eye on the conversation beyond the Bay Area, we work with a wide range of local and national/international artists both emerging and established. We work with curators and other gallerists to host their exhibition ideas – to date we’ve had shows curated by Keith J. Varadi, Jeanne Gerrity, Jackie Clay, and galleries Queer Thoughts, Cooper Cole, Document, Ed. Varie and more. Our new space will feature exhibitions curated by Margaret Tedesco ([ 2nd Floor projects ]), Kevin Kruger, and Casey O’Neal.
Our new space is very exciting: a storefront on Mission Street. With 14ft ceilings, this will be a much more public space but the costs of getting it up and running have left us a bit overwhelmed (lighting and massive wall repair etc.).
Additionally, we are planning on renovations to our Chinatown space's walls, ceiling, floor, and electrical - we've one light fixture that has a personality of its own, turning on and off now and then. As much as we respect the light's whims, simpler, less bulky new lighting would be a great improvement to the space, as would hiding currently exposed conduits.
And - sooner than later if we can exceed our goal - we hope to design, have built, and share with the community an online repository of project space history. Alternative Venue will be a crowd-sourced archive of exhibitions, images, texts etc - think wiki, but more aesthetically pleasing.
So, thank you for readin' and maybe helping us out. We're constantly excited about what can happen in our spaces and hope you can be a part of us continuing to grow.
