Revitalizing Our Community
A historic Detroit business district, The Avenue of Fashion (Livernois between Seven Mile and Eight Mile) is changing in positive ways: renovated storefronts, new shops and restaurants, and more people discovering all the fun the area has to offer.
Detroit Fiber Works won the Knight Arts Challenge to complete a project that will spark continued revitalization on the Avenue of Fashion, and now we want to win your hearts, minds and wallets to help us complete the project!
Workshops, Community & Art
Our project has two major components:
Free fiber art workshops for community members (children, teenagers and adults), including lectures, field trips and hands-on creation of fiber-art. There will be six, six-week sessions with ten participants in each session.
Construction of an outdoor art installation on the Avenue of Fashion median, created with fiber art made by participants in the free fiber art workshops and their instructors, with design input from neighborhood residents and area businesses.
Just as it does in other cities around the world, public art on the Livernois median will add excitement to the area, create conversation and become a popular destination, attracting visitors to the neighborhood shops and restaurants. The fiber art workshops will ignite the imaginations and creativity of the participants and expand awareness of fiber as an art form.
How You Can Help
Please consider a donation of any amount. Every donation will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Even if you can’t make a donation, you can help us by telling others about our project and this campaign. We thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!
How Your Donation Will Be Used
The Knight Arts Challenge requires that we raise matching funds equal to the amount of our grant. All funds will be used for art materials, student transportation, teaching fees, and construction costs.
