About the project
With antibiotic-resistant bacteria becoming more common worldwide, our health and the health of our beloved ones are increasingly at risk.
Our goal is to make a stainless steel drinking bottle with antibacterial coating tested and proved to kill bacteria.
The drug-resistant bacteria issue is a growing concern all around the world. By creating an antibacterial bottle, the most basic and necessary action of drinking became safe and all the family can benefit from it.
What is antibiotic-resistant bacteria and why it is so dangerous?
Antibiotic resistance happens when bacteria mutates in some way reducing or eliminating the effectiveness of an antibiotic. Once it happens, that new bacteria strain is resistant to that antibiotic and different ones need to be used.
Nowadays, for example, there are strains of Escherichia coli resistant to all kind of commercial available antibiotics, including colistin drug.
How does the antibacterial coating works?
This coating is made using nano silver particles embedded into titanium and tungsten metal, providing a high abrasion resistance and long lasting coating.
A simple and not fully scientific explanation for an easy understanding: The silver ions contained in the coating react with the bacteria when the bacteria deposits on the surface. Then, silver ions damage key enzyme systems of the cell membranes, effectively killing the bacteria.
Is it long lasting?
Definitely yes. The special coating structure has a surface hardness of around 1500-1700 HV. For your reference, stainless steel and silver have a surface hardness or around 200-250 HV. Our coating is highly abrasion resistance. As long as you don’t destroy the surface, the nano silver coating will be effective.
The bottle is using nano silver. Is the nano silver safe?
Yes, it is. Our coating uses nano silver. There are very tiny amounts of silver in our formula. And, even using very few silver in our coating, it can kill bacteria.
For your reference, EPA has approved a maximum intake of 0.1 mg of silver per liter of any ingested liquid.
In our bottle, the whole coating has less of 0.1 mg of nano silver content. So, based on EPA regulations, the bottle is totally safe.
How do we make the coating?
With an innovative hybrid PVD system, we make the coating outside of the bottle and on the internal side of the bottle end, so the surface area prone to being in contact with bacteria is protected.
The existing problem on the market
The plastic bottles are very soft and easy to scratch when cleaning by conventional means.
These tiny lines are actually a bacteria reservoir since the scourers can not reach and clean the totality of the scratch canals.
Some bottles have a plastic ending for drinking. It is not easy to clean, and it also gets the same scratch problem than the reusable bottles.
Some people prefer to boil the bottle. But all kind of plastic, even the marked as hot resistant, whether you boil it or not, will release into the liquid estrogen-like chemicals that alters the hormone balance in the body.

After drinking (even the heat-sterilized ones), the bacteria from the mouth and from the environment will deposit on the end of the bottle and will start to grow and multiply. So, each time you drink you are also ingesting bacteria.
Stainless steel bottles are an improvement over the plastic ones but the bacteria problem stills. The only way to fully address the problem is to apply a hard, durable and long lasting anti bacteria coating on a stainless steel bottle.
The ABA drinking bottle
It is a double layer thermos stainless steel bottle. It can keep both hot and cold liquids for long time, usually 10 to 15 hours. The net internal volume is approximately 380 cc.
We have developed the coating and fine tuning the parameters for the best performance, both in durability and bacteria killing effect.
We have made tests in the university proving the efficiency of the coating on killing harmful bacterias.
We have filled up a patent for the coating.
We have been looking for several stainless steel bottle suppliers and we have selected one that has an stable and consistent production with a very good quality control in-house.
We are going to cooperate with a big coating factory that will provide us with state of the art PVD equipment, internal laboratory tests for the coating and very strict and tight quality control system.
Now, we have made all the homework and we have reached the stage that we need your support to turn ABA anti bacteria drinking bottle into reality.

John and Rafael are the co-founders of ABA. We met in Hong Kong several years ago. We are two technical guys who can talk several hours non stop about technology, so, quickly, we became very good friends.
Together, we have a multidisciplinary duty experience including general management, PVD coatings, manufacturing, project management and quality assurance among others.
We have made a good preparation before starting this project. With our experience working on factories, quality control and production, we are confident we are going to deliver all the drinking bottles to our backers on time or earlier.
